Hey Audio Citizen!

This happens to be my favorite Monday of the year because we get to celebrate all things podcasting today! Today is International Podcast Day!

I love podcasts and podcasting for many reasons but my favorite is accessibility. Podcasting doesn’t have many of the barriers presented by traditonal radio, as you can have a podcast on anything and everything anywhere. You can record your podcast from under your bed if you like!🤣However, podcasting does indeed take so much work and time behind the scenes and sometimes even resources, especially for independent podcasters.

A lot of podcasters also struggle to monetize their podcasts, perhaps because of the difficulty in achieving extremely high listenership that many sponsors would find attractive. And so the NUMBERS pressure is a real struggle within the industry. But my encouragement to any podcaster and creator is to start looking at numbers as actual people in a room then you’ll realise that 30 listeners isn’t as neglible as it seems.

So, I asked a few podcasters, from different parts of the globe, a couple of questions about their podcasting journey and this is what they said:

What’s your why?

Alicia Sutton (USA)
Host: 50, Now What?!" podcast

Turning 50 is a time of profound growth and enlightenment often overlooked in a woman's life.  This is why I developed the "50, Now What?!" podcast. To have an inclusive safe space to share our stories, provide valuable insights and encourage new adventures for all women regardless of their age.

What’s your number one strategy for growing your listenership/Audience?

Consistency. Occasionally bringing guests who have a big following or a "different" group of people who follow them. Newsletter. Also experimenting with better headlines and show notes.

Trailer swaps. Reach out to podcasters similar to your niche, and ask if they want to run a trailer swap (they play yours on their show, and vice versa). Because the audience is similar, and listeners will generally be on an app already when listening, it's easier to click open your show and follow.

Pitch your podcast, events, special episodes, etc, to industry newsletters. I've had great success by being featured by Podnews, Podbam, Pocket Casts, etc. These are all followed or used by podcasters/ people interested in the podcast industry, so again the audience is much warmer.

Start your own newsletter. Subscribers to your newsletter tend to be more involved with your show, since they've given you permission to send stuff to them, which is a bigger sign of intent and engagement.

On taking breaks!

Podcasting is such an amazing outlet for me, it allows me to learn so many different perspectives while enjoying a great conversation. While I enjoyed waking up daily and getting on the mic, I’m also learning the importance of taking a break and allowing yourself the opportunity to do some self reflection and even healing. I’ll be back though!

What’s been your greatest hightlight in podcasting?

Olave Orawo (Kenya)
Host: In All Honesty Podcast

Highlights since the creation of my podcast, In All Honesty Podcast include:

  • 1600 YouTube and 4,000 Spotify subscribers.

  • Learnings from the episodes created a trusting community that catapulted me into starting a consultancy, By Olave. The consultancy offers podcast growth support, emotional intelligence coaching and I’ve partnered with qualified psychology specialists to offer mental health support

My major highlights include learning from my guests, especially Dr. Negar Fani who spoke with me about the impact of racial trauma on the brain of Black Women. That was super interesting and validating to me and remains one of my most educational episodes.

And recently winning Best Society and Education Podcast from Earworthy Independent Podcast Awards and Best Business Podcast from Black Podcasting Awards. Both blow my mind!

Greatest highlight in podcasting so far: Honestly, the relationships I’ve created AFTER sitting with my guests. I have a few that we have remained in contact and continue to exchange perspectives and current day events.

Shou, Host at Shou Talks

Hearing that we’re able to make people feel less alone in their career journey is our greatest highlight.

Michael Ashtiany and Jen Lawton-Hunt (UK)
Hosts at Off Air Voiceover Podcast

Challenges! Challenges! Challenges!

Funds!
4 seasons 70+ episodes in, the podcast runs out of pocket. It is a passion project but finances limit the scale to which I’d want to execute some ideas to achieve a wide impact.
(The podcast offers Ad Space, Sponsorship & Gifting Opportunities)

Another challenge is having your niche embraced by the audience. This can present challenges when growing an audience and seeking partnership, particularly if your niche isn’t a conventional channel of thought. I focus on understanding the psychology of human behaviour and societal systems, which is very unique but also complex but relevant. For example, we had a series on sibling placement which allowed people to understand how they subconsciously behave by virtue of being a last, first or middle child.

What Keeps you going?

What keeps me going are thoughts like, “One day, someday, somebody somewhere will be faced with a situation with no one to talk to and this show (as jumbled as our conversations are) will be the very light that gets them through it.”

How can you celebrate International Podcast Day with us?
First, make sure you listen and subscribe to all these podcasts and follow them on social media and share with a friend too! Secondly, you may consider partnering with any of these podcasters if your interests align.

Thanks for celebrating with us and see you in October!
Best, Tracy Kadessa
