How are you prioritizing your mental health?

#Issue 5: Mental health

Hey Audio Citizen!

Today is world mental health day. However, I think that everyday should be world mental health day! Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate the setting aside of 10th of October as a day to raise awareness on mental health but mental health is indeed an everyday thing.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of everyday life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. Mental health is as important as physical health.

So, what are some of the ways we can prioritise our mental health everyday?

Now, I am no expert 😃but I have gathered a few tips from some experts!

  • Get off the grid for a while/ limit your information intake.

While it can be challenging to go offline as most of us literally live and work online today, we must be intentional about what we consume and prioritise taking breaks. Studies have shown that being in constant news cycles increases our stress levels therefore the need for information diets.

  • Create good relationships

Although we live in an individualistic society, the truth is; we are “pack animals” and we were never meant to do life alone. Nurturing authentic relationships can be tough but we must try to find people who are good for us (we must be good for them too).

  • Physical activity

You don’t have to spend hours and hours in the gym but fixing a little physical activity into your daily routine is essential because being active releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good.

  • Living in the present

It’s easy to get caught up with planning for tomorrow, and even when tomorrow comes, we’re still planning for the next tomorrow. But living in the moment and appreciating the little things creates a sense of calmness and improves our mental well-being.

  • Letting go of that which we can’t control

It would be wondeful if we could control everything, wouldn’t it? Well, it isn’t possible. So we have no choice but to let go of that which we can’t control. Doing so reduces anxiety and gives us more peace.

  • Connecting with nature

Nature is the best medicine. Get off your laptop/phone and take a deep breath outside!

  • Rest!
You owe your body a break, don’t let yourself get burnt out.

What do you do to improve your mental health? Share with us some of your tips.

    See you soon!
    Best, Tracy
