Voices November Series
Issue 7
Hey Audio Citizen!
Thank goodness it’s Friday!
Do you have any exciting plans lined up this weekend or is it a weekend of “netflix and chill”😝?My most exciting plan these days is called sleep😴. Sometimes I even look forward to sleeping again as soon as I wake up! You know, when many of us were children, early bedtime felt like punishment because it was interrupting more “interesting” things. Funny how quickly that changes as soon as you become an adult.
Today our ‘‘Voices November” series takes a trip to a place Sir. Winston Churchill referred to as “The Pearl of Africa” when he first set foot there, as he was overwhelmed by its maginificence. He was enchanted by its the lush vegation, stunning landscapes, pleasant climate and rich biodiversity. Winston Churchill couldn’t stop talking about Uganda.
One on one with voice artist Faith Mulungi
And from “the pearl of Africa”, Audio Citizens’ Empire presents to you a pearl - Faith Mulungi. Faith Mulungi is a voice artist living in Kampala. She has over 8 years of experience in media ( radio and voice acting) and is an endometriosis warrrior and advocate.
This is what she had to say about her journey as a voice artist:
Where it all began I started voice acting in my late teens and early 20s but it wasn't paid work. I was a volunteer at the church media team, anchored news and voiced mentions for the bulletins. When I joined radio in 2015, I perfected my skill over the years and earned my first cheque in 2018 and haven't stopped since. | Faith Mulungi |
Tell us a little about the voice arts scene scene in your country.
The voice artist scene in Uganda is unregulated but vibrant. Initially, it was dominated by media personalities and actors but over time, it has grown. As for the pay, it is still quite low with rates even ranging from 13- 27 dollars. There is a need to professionalize and have a threshold to protect voice actors from exploitation and underpayment. I also see an important need for a database of more professional record studios.
Additionally, I hope to see more opportunities to audition and showcase new talent and for the professionals to get better visibility leading to alternative opportunities other than depending on Ad companies for jobs.
Let’s talk challenges and exciting moments! | Many of the projects I have worked on have been exciting but my ultimate dream is to voice an animation on the global scale. I've also been able to mentor younger people who wish to join the industry however cutthroat it can be. The range I've achieved over the years, when I listen back to some of my work, I am proud. |
What are you looking forward to?
